The Challenge
This pool had laid unused for a couple of years and just prior to that it had supposedly been refurbished by another pool company! After the previous refurb, the pool soon fell into a poor state of repair and the owners pretty much gave up on it and contemplated filling it in. They called us as a last resort to see if we thought we could revive it at reasonable cost.
As you can see from the pictures below, the previous refurb included tiling over the original tiling without correct preperation resulting in the new tiles lifting. Weeds were growing out of a number of tiled areas, the coping stones we loose, paving discoloured and once we lifted the copings, found that the supporting ring beam had started to disintegrate and had to be replaced. All of the old tiles were removed and the underlaying render thoroughly prepared and repaired to ensure that the pool has a long future ahead of it.
The Solution
The pool and attached spa were originally of Marblelite construction with a tile band above and fully tiled ‘spill over’ between the spa and pool creating a waterfall effect. After discussion with the customer it was decided to fully tile the pool and spa, replace the copings and jet/acid wash the paving.
At the same time, we replaced the ageing pool heater with a Certikin Genie which apart from being much more reliable than the old heater, saved the customer over 30% of his gas bill. We also replaced the underwater lights with modern LED bulbs, replaced the filter media with OC1 and fitted a new ‘swing over’ ladder unit in the deep end.
The end results speak for themselves and the pool owner was ‘over the moon’ with the end result. We had several meetings with the customer discussing tiling options and once the decision was made by the customer, work started immediately as we had a deadline to meet for the customer. The deadline was met and the pool was used extensively for the remainder of the season.
